One Response to MLBMS response to Baytex’s Water Usage Request

    I sent the letter below to Fenske. The more people that write out MLA the better will be our chances of getting the beaver dams removed.

    Hello Jackie Fenske;

    I have owned a cottage a Muriel Lake for 34 years. Muriel Lake is located about 14 miles due south of Bonnyville Alberta. During the past 34 years the level in Muriel Lake has decreased by more than 14 feet. Drought and human activity, including Oil companies pumping water from the aquifer are no doubt to blame.

    A good part of the drainage basin for Muriel is from the Garnier Lakes which are located on Provincial Crown land at the south-east end of Muriel. Beaver dams are restricting the flow of water from these lakes to Muriel. The MLBMS asked permission to blow these dams and was given permission to do so from the MD of Bonnyville and Fish and Game. Two ranchers who free range cattle on this crown land have refused permission to take out the beaver dams as apparently their permission is also required. Why they refused is beyond me as even if the beaver dams were removed it would not drain the Garnier Lakes dry and there would still be more then enough water for the range cattle. Why the Government of Alberta has given the ranches, who free range their cattle on this land for a minimum fee, total ownership rights to our crown land is totally unfair: Especially unfair to us cottage owners at Muriel who desperately need the drainage from this area.

    I humbly request your help in getting permission to have these beaver dams removed.

    Thank you.

    Mel
