No lake bottom is impervious to seepage so pumping water from any aquifer connected to the lake will increase the hydraulic head between the lake and the aquifer and thereby increase the leakage from the lake.

I believe Muriel Lake is at the highest elevation of any lake in the area so it will likely be most affected by any pumping from the aquifers.

In years past the level of Muriel (as per the Gurneyville meter station) has increased very slightly over the winter months which would indicate that the rate of seepage from the lake bottom was less than the flow rate of springs feeding the lake. Also possibly the indicated level increase was due to the weight of the snow on the ice ??? Brent Welsh was supposed to have looked into this ???

    Just my thoughts.

Keep up the good work people.

Thanks Mel! We appreciate your thoughts. It seems a complicated relationship between the groundwater in the aquifer and the surface water in the lake. Our explanation is very helpful. We are hoping that Brent Welsh will provide the results of this study soon and we are going to keep looking for more information…
